A Familiar Stranger In The Mirror

I met a familiar stranger in the mirror.
A little closer to tomorrow, a little farther from here.

I knew everything about her yet remained blissfully unaware,
About who she was and from where.
She had the same eyes, the same nose, the same hair,
But there was something different about her air.

It brought a different sense of delight
To have seen myself in that light,
For over years I didn’t look at myself in the mirror
Just to see today how time flies.

I met a familiar stranger in the mirror.
A little closer to tomorrow, a little farther from here.

No sooner than bliss touched my brow,
Fear took no time to knock my door.
For there was something different in her eyes,
Which narrated untold stories dwelling on the inside.

And the childhood fantasies had long ago died,
Only to see there was a different shade of green on the other side.
And mark my words for a different shade of green
Doesn’t necessarily mean the grass is greener on the other side.

I met a familiar stranger in the mirror.
A little closer to tomorrow, a little farther from here.

Fear shook me in my bones,
Left me wondering into what I have grown.
‘Cause there’s a lot about me which remained unknown,
She looked a little beaten and a little torn.

It feels like it was just yesterday
When happiness was around and all was a fair play.
There were no worries and troubles could be shooed away.
I am surprised that, in today’s humdrum, all that could fade away.

I met a familiar stranger in the mirror.
A little closer to tomorrow, a little farther from here.

My reverie was interrupted by a “Rush! We’re getting late.”
And I used the face powder to deck her up with a smiling grace.
I looked up again at the mirror.
She was gone and I could finally see myself.
Who stood in front of the mirror was no longer her.
